How it works

Windows that know where the others are

  1. Open a second window. Use New window, or drag this tab out of the tab bar.
  2. Drag the windows anywhere on your screen, even across monitors.
  3. Watch the dials. The main window tracks every other one. The rest only point back to the main.

Window Compass

A demo of how much a web page knows about where it is on your screen. Every window of the page reports its viewport position (screenX/screenY and the outer and inner sizes) over a BroadcastChannel. One window is the main window: the oldest one, or whichever you last pressed Set as main in. The main window draws a line to every other window, exactly where it sits on the desktop, so overlapping windows show their outlines through each other, plus a minimap of the whole screen. The other windows only know about the main one and turn a compass needle to point at it as you drag windows around. Windows that close say goodbye; ones that go silent drop out after a few seconds.

Window Compass needs several browser windows side by side on one screen, so each can see where the others are. Phones and tablets open new windows as tabs in the same spot, so there is nothing to point at.
